What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the treatment of choice to replace missing teeth. Many patients choose implants to replace a single tooth, several teeth, or to support a full set of dentures. Implants are comprised of three parts; implant post, implant abutment and implant crown.

Implant Post  (I)

The first component of the implant is the implant post. The implant post is surgically placed in the jaw bone where it functions as a sturdy anchor for the missing tooth. Because of its location below the gum-line, it is not visible and mimics a natural tooth root. They are made of titanium which is a strong, lightweight metal that is accepted by the human body. After several months, the implant and jawbone fuse together in a process called osseointegration. During this healing time, Dr. Christine Grant will fabricate a temporary crown so that you are never without a tooth.

Implant Abutment (II)

The second component of an implant is called the abutment. It too is comprised of compatible metals and is designed to replicate the body of a natural tooth. Part of it is fixated to the implant post below the gum-line and the other part extends above the gum-line. Dr. Grant only uses custom fabricated abutments to replicate the natural shape and color of your teeth. Dr. Grant does not use metal stock abutments that come in standard shapes and sizes and are silver metal in color. Patients complain the silver metal shows at the gum-line. Instead, she fabricates custom designed abutments that are made of Zirconia comprised of white ceramic. Patients prefer the natural appearance of white ceramic abutments along the gum-line. After the abutment is placed, the final restoration can be made. Final restorations include; implant crowns, implant bridges and implant over-dentures.

Implant Crown (III)

The third component of an implant is the crown. Dr. Grant utilizes state-of-the-art esthetic materials in the fabrication of her crowns including Zirconia (ceramic) crowns. Zirconia crowns are known for their strength and beauty, which makes them able to withstand chipping and fractures and are the ideal restoration for implants. In addition, Dr. Grant's implant bridges and implant-over dentures are custom designed to emulate the optical, mechanical and biological characteristics of your natural teeth. Patient's are happy with the superiority of Dr. Grant's crowns uniting strength and beauty.

Dental Implants Are Beneficial To Your Oral Health In Several Ways:

  • A dental implant is most similar to a natural tooth.
  • Implants look, feel and function like natural teeth.
  • Nearby teeth do not have to be involved in the replacement of missing teeth.
  • Prevents other teeth from drifting towards the space and misalignment.
  • Implants last longer than any other tooth replacement, can last a lifetime.
  • Improves sense of taste and thereby, increases your appetite.
  • Improves ability to chew without pain and gum irritation.
  • Fixed in place and have no loose parts that can move around.
  • Dental implants are stable and comfortable.
  • Better than a fixed bridge (hard to clean and doesn't last as long).
  • Better than a partial denture (is removable and causes gum sores).
  • Prevents shrinkage of your jawbone from tooth loss and facial collapse.
  • Restores and enhances your facial tissues.
  • Prevents an unattractive smile and embarrassment from missing teeth.
  • Implants maintain an attractive, natural and youthful smile.
