Composite (White) Fillings

Professional Dental Care — Before Composite Fillings in Tampa, FL

What is a Composite Filling?

composite filling is a tooth-colored plastic and glass mixture used to treat a cavity and restore the tooth’s health and function. Due to advancements in technology, Dr. Christine Grant places white composite fillings instead of silver amalgam fillings. We provide composite fillings to provide patients with the strongest, most durable and natural looking aesthetic treatment for cavities. Dr. Grant and her staff believe in the health and beauty of composite fillings.

Composites vs Amalgams

Advantages of Composite fillings:
  • Match your natural tooth color and help you look younger, healthier and increase self-confidence
  • Metal and Mercury free
  • More conservative preparation of the tooth structure
  • Stronger and more durable material due to recent advances in technology
  • Healthier and more Beautiful

Disadvantages of Amalgam Fillings:
  • Unattractive and Conspicuous – get darker over time making you appear older and less confident
  • Contain 50% Mercury along with Tin, Copper, Silver, or Zinc
  • More aggressive preparation of the natural tooth structure
  • Amalgam fillings can crack teeth due to the expansion & contraction of the metals
  • As the tooth ages, amalgams become weak, brittle and often times are an indicator of old dentistry.

When Should I Have Composite Fillings Done?

The condition leading to the need for a filling, dental decay is the most common form of oral disease. During your regular check-up, Dr. Grant will examine your teeth and your x-rays to determine whether or not you have any cavities. If so, these cavities need to be removed as quickly as possible to avoid progression to the nerve and be restored with white composite fillings. Dr. Grant will also assess any silver amalgam fillings present.

More and more people are opting to have their silver fillings removed and replaced with composite resin. As silver fillings age, they expand and contract and can cause your teeth to crack. If you are missing too much of the tooth’s natural structure, a dental crown may be required. Dr. Grant’s goal is to replace your silver fillings early on to preserve more natural tooth structure and strengthen your tooth.
